FS2020 - Great Sim, but some scenery issues still need work.

Hey Pilots,

I came across this very good article by someone who knows what he's talking about. Great comparison pics accompany his descriptions, giving you a perfect view of the points he makes. In the process he points out that FS2020 is still, fresh 'out of the box' an improvement over the other simulators, and only likely to get better with time as some of these issues get corrected (hopefully).

I might note that there's an overall tendency towards 'flatness' because of the top-down nature of satellite imagery. Fly to PAKT and you'll see that it's back to the flat default FSX/P3D airport without the elevated runway of the Orbx addon for PAKT.

Hey FS2020 Pilots...and those considering it,

I've been playing with my new toy now for a number of flights. Today I tried the Boeing 787. It wasn't much fun because I really didn't know how to fly the plane, and as with the rest of all things FS2020/MSFS, the dearth of user manuals makes all things related to the new sim an experience not unlike a treasure hunt exercise.

I've managed to get comfortable with the Airbus A320Neo and will stick with that for my commercial aircraft for now until we see some better documentation.

For those of us with the more elaborate flight decks...also known as (aka) multiple monitors and other hardware addons, we're still left wanting with this new simulator. I've managed to find an acceptable setup for daytime flying by stretching the windowed FS2020 across 3-screens for my setup. Nvidia Surround also works, but it's a pain to deal with and no difference in performance or quality as far as I can tell. This is ok for daytime flying, but the night flights - so fuzzy, are not nearly as good as P3d/FSX. So... another reason I'm not willing to give up my P3D/FSX sims quite yet.

Patch number 2 is on its way and will be released within the next 10 days, addressing the following issues:

PATCH #2!
Patch is finishing final testing. Being prepped for release.
Patch will be released within the next 10 days.
Full patch notes will be released with the patch.

PATCH #2 HIGHLIGHTS (full patch notes will be released with the patch)
Performance improvements
ATC updates
UI updates
Aerodynamic updates
Aircraft updates
Cockpit visuals and animation updates
General aviation system updates
General aviation avionic updated
Airliner system updates
Airliner avionic updates
Live Weather updates – (e.g. 225/3kt wind fixed, persistency fixed, etc.)
Upgraded multiplayer servers
Marketplace updates
Content Manager updates
Localization updates
Accessibility updates
Camera updates
Bush Trip updates (e.g. completion trigger fixed/Completionist achievement fixed)
World updates

Hopefully these "performance improvements" will fix your multiple monitor issues. I only use a single monitor so I'm really hoping for updates that will fix the autopilot issues with several of the aircraft.

Thanks Eric, I figured there would eventually be updates, but I didn't have the latest news on them. Yes...the issues with the autothrottle on the A320 is really annoying, and that's likely to be fixed based on your information. I'm not sure about the multiplayer sim issue, as I think that's in the hands of one of the partner developers. But I'm sure it will be eventually. In the meantime, there's plenty of fun to be had with what's available.

I'm only highlighting things that affect me directly... and perhaps other pilots with similar setups. I take the position of "I'm on board with FS2020, but eagerly waiting for those things that will make me abandon the other sims and make FS2020/MSFS my only sim in the foreseeable future".

Well, just had my first failed flight from Charleston, SC to Lubbock, TX. Near the end of my flight, ATC started my descent WAY too late. Ended up at FL110 while passing over Lubbock at -2000 fpm. Circled around and got down to my assigned altitude for the approach. On short final my copilot unexpectedly announced a go-around and ATC advised me to climb to FL300!!! What in the world?!? I was committed to the landing so I continued in and just before touchdown the aircraft dropped like a rock and slammed into the runway...

The entire flight was flawless right up to the approach descent, then everything went south extremely fast. Disappointing, but this has been my first anomaly with this new simulator.

Yes, I've had a number of flights that have done similar. On landing the autothrottle goes nuts and goes into full go-around power and I can't get the thing shut off. I think I tried turning off the co-pilot assist to avoid it in future, but it happened again anyway. At that point I wasn't sure whether problems were due to my failure to set it up right or that it was not related to the co-pilot's operation but instead to a bug in the autopilot system.

I also seemed to notice an increase in frequency of these problems after setting Developer Mode on. I did this to have access to changing plane models on the fly, but I'm thinking that this might bring in some additional issues so I turned that mode back off again.

It was also my understanding that in normal circumstances the autothrottle should not be able to go any higher than the highest setting of the throttle control. Therefore, by pulling the throttle back when it 'runs away' on landing should allow for salvaging a landing, but perhaps a bit farther down the runway. I'm also not sure that fixes things either though, because I'm usually well into a climb-out past the runway before I'm able to regain control of the throttle.

Oh well, we've put up with these kinds of issues with all the other sims, so we shouldn't expect perfection from this one either "right of of the box".
